An interesting utility was released on Friday by independent dev company 1951FDG. sixtyfour

SixtyFour 1.0 is a memory optimizer for Mac OS X and it’s capable of forcing 64-bit apps to open in 32-bit mode for G5-based and 64-bit-capable Intel hardware low on memory.

Once you install the app, you’ll be presented a list of your Mac apps that open in 64-bit mode by default. The apps that will not be capable of opening and running in 32-bit mode, will not be listed.
Simply check the apps that you want to open in 32-bit mode and leave un-checked the ones you still want to open in 64-bit mode.

When you open an app in 64-bit mode, it uses significantly more RAM than its 32-bit counterpart, therefore if you don’t have a lot of RAM, either you invest in new memory modules or try out this app and see if it works for you.

SixtyFour is compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 or higher.

For a limited time only, the app is available for free, but donations to the developer are always welcome.
